Why has my burglar alarm system stopped working?

At ESP Security, ‘Why has my burglar alarm stopped working properly?’ is a question we hear all the time

Nobody wants their alarm system to ring for hours at a time in the middle of the night. Or an alarm system that is not protecting your property as it should. In the absence of regular maintenance, your alarm system can become unreliable. Sooner or later, it will become problematic.

Usually, there can be a few small reasons which lead to a big problem.

The first one is usually a faulty alarm sensor, others include faulty contacts, and faulty pir beam also known as motion beam. Tamper issues may also lead to alarm systems not working.

Faulty Alarm Sensors: If you have a faulty alarm sensor, then you need to either replace the sensor entirely or check to see if there’s a specific fault to do with the termination/wiring of the sensor. It could also even be something as simple as a loose sensor lid.

Old battery: An old battery can cause a myriad of problems with your alarm system. It is recommended that batteries in alarm panels are changed every 4 or 5 years. To fix a faulty battery all you need to do is to replace it with a new one.

Faulty alarm panel: If there’s a fault with your alarm panel it may be simply just a single faulty zone, or it might be that the whole alarm panel is starting to develop faults and needs replacing. Please note, it is common for old alarms to develop faults that require the alarm to be replaced.

Alarm Tamper Fault:  The most common cause of tampers on alarm systems that we encounter are either the cover on an alarm sensor becoming loose or a damaged cable. The problem with a tamper fault on an alarm system is, the system does not have to be armed for it to start going off. A tamper on an alarm system is always active. If the alarm cable was broken it would also cause a tamper and wouldn’t allow the user to set the alarm system. The best course of action is often to call in the professionals, and we can use our specialised equipment and expertise to find the tamper fault quickly and efficiently.

All these faults can be avoided by having your alarm system regularly serviced and tested on a regular basis. This is something we at ESP Security will be happy to undertake for you at 018391188 or info@espsecurity.ie

Regular alarm maintenance is important, to ensure that you, your family, and your valuables are always protected. Maintaining your alarm system will give you continued peace of mind and even save you from burglar repair costs.

Installing a burglar alarm system is the first step in protecting your home from theft. Regular alarm maintenance will ensure that it functions when you need it the most.

Though alarm systems vary, all burglar alarms do need to be maintained. We recommend servicing your burglar alarms at least once a year even if it’s just a check for peace of mind. Inspect equipment like the sensors, control panel, keypad, speakers, and batteries for broken down parts.

Things to look for include corroded wires or damage to the plastic exteriors. In addition, batteries should be recharged or replaced.
