Christmas Holiday Travel: Keeping Leinster Properties Safe While You’re Away

December means trips — short escapes, family visits, and sometimes business travel. Empty homes are textbook targets if they show obvious signs of absence. Thankfully, modern home automation and a few common-sense practices can reduce risk dramatically.

Nationally, burglary totals have shown small increases in some recent annual snapshots, but winter phases targeted by Garda operations have produced notable declines in overnight residential burglaries compared with a decade ago. That mix of community measures, policing, and technology is powerful — and automation is your friend here.

Automations and habits to put in place before you go:

Smart lighting schedules. Program interior lights to mimic normal evening patterns. Randomised schedules that differ day-to-day are more convincing than simple on/off timers.

Smart plugs and voice assistants. Use them to run radios, charging phones and small appliances on a timer — just enough ambient noise to suggest life. Avoid leaving predictable patterns, though (e.g., lights on at exactly 7pm every night).

Monitored alarms and defined response plans. If your alarm is monitored, ensure contact details are up to date and that the control room has an authorised person for keyholder response. Response times are critical; monitored systems are linked to a clear escalation path.

Camera alerts and two-way audio. Cloud-connected cameras that send motion alerts to your phone and allow two-way audio can spook intruders and let neighbours know something is wrong.

Neighbour involvement. Ask someone you trust to park a car in the driveway every few days. A living presence is the best deterrent.

Physical measures that matter. Secure gates, locks on side gates, shutter bolts on reachable windows and removing easy climbing aids (bins, ladders) are low-cost, high-impact changes.

Leinster’s commuter towns often have houses that look empty during workdays and then again during holiday visits; combining automation with physical hardening is the winning formula. If you’re planning travel this December, take 30–60 minutes to implement these steps — they’re inexpensive, fast and effective.

ESP Security, entering our 30th year in 2026, has worked with hundreds of Leinster homeowners to design simple travel-ready security packages. A brief visit or phone consultation can leave your home vastly safer and your mind much calmer.
