Alarm systems don’t have to only be armed when you leave the property. For example, many Dublin homeowners say they want to feel more secure when inside their homes, and for good reason.

The number of burglaries increased by more than 20% when compared to the same time period in the previous year, according to a garda report published in November 2022.

There were 3,111 burglaries reported to the gardai in 2022 which is an increase of 21% compared to the same time period last year when there were 2,579.

Assistant Commissioner for the Dublin Metropolitan Region Angela Willis said the increase was “not unexpected” due to Covid-19 restrictions being in place for much of 2021. This is especially true for burglaries as many people spent most of their time in their homes.

The region with the most burglaries was Dublin South Central which stretches from Sandymount to Inchicore and also includes UCD’s sprawling campus. There have been 636 burglaries in this area at the time the report was published – up 24% on the 2021 figure of 512.

The West area had the second highest burglary rate with 620 reports which is an increase of 84 on the previous year. This area includes Blanchardstown, Finglas, Clondalkin and Saggart.

The North region had the third highest number of burglaries at 600. This area includes Ballymun, Howth, Swords and Balbriggan.

The Dublin South region saw 526 burglaries which had a 37% increase on the same time in the previous year. This area includes Drimnagh, Rathmines, Terenure and Jobstown.

The North Central area had the second-fewest with 395 burglaries. East Wall, Phibsborough, Smithfield and parts of Drumcondra are included in this area.

There were 334 burglaries in the East region which makes it the statistically safest area for house break-ins. The area includes Blackrock, Goatstown, Ballinteer, Leopardstown, Dun Laoghaire and Shankill.
