Tips to Avoid Burglaries During the Summer Months
Gardai authorities often note that burglaries are a crime of opportunity. Warm weather has a natural tendency of drawing people from their homes for daily activities. More people leave their residences on holiday than any other time of year. This leaves homes unoccupied and less people in the neighbourhood who might be alerted to suspicious activities.
87% of burglaries are considered preventable. The Gardai reports that approximately 30% of all burglaries are committed without force courtesy of an unlocked door or window.
Here are a few tips homeowners can to do to protect their homes:
- Always lock your home and be sure you have quality door locks and deadbolts. Lock windows on the first floor, as well as higher levels.
- Never leave valuables that can be easily carried away near or within view of an open window or door.
- When leaving on holiday, home owners should maintain a “lived in” appearance at their home. Having someone call in and collect post and free local newspapers will create a presence that people aren’t away. It is important to also let trusted neighbours know you will be away so they can keep an eye on your home.
Another way to prevent a home burglary is to invest in an alarm system. Insurance companies offer home-owners premium discounts of up to 20% if a home equipped with a monitored alarm system. The discounts can be substantial enough to pay a portion of the monitoring or installation costs of a system.
A home without a security system is three times more likely to be broken into than a home with one. Homeowners should make sure the control panel of their security system is away from windows, so potential burglars can’t watch to see what your security code is. Also, don’t keep your security code displayed anywhere, especially near the control panel. If you don’t have a security system installed in your home, contact ESP Security today.
