TELLY architect Dermot Bannon has kickstarted a home improvement frenzy — with a massive €4.7billion spent on pimping up pads in 2016.

Construction Industry Federation analysis shows that 77,000 homeowners carried out improvement works over the past three years, under the Government’s Home Renovation Incentive.

That allows homeowners to claim income tax credit of 13 per cent on any work they have done on their own house or a rental property.

According to the report, the average spend per project is €16,000 and experts believe that splurge on interior trends — as seen on Bannon’s Room to Improve series on RTE — is responsible for keeping the construction industry afloat during the recession.

CIF director general Tom Parlon said: “The Home Renovation Incentive has been very successful on several fronts. It supported an incredible €4billion spend into the Irish economy in 2016.

“This money is recycled into the local community by the 9,000 plus domestic contractors involved in delivering renovation construction across Ireland.

“These businesses employ a good proportion of the 140,000 people engaged in construction in Ireland.”

The HRI has resulted in more than €10billion being pumped into the construction industry since 2014.

And Mr Parlon insisted: “It’s likely that the incentive kept many thousands of construction workers, tradespeople and companies afloat during the recession.”

He added: “The increase in home improvement over the last three years now means that the overall repair, maintenance and improvement sector has grown to a quarter of the entire construction industry output.”

Dublin was the leading county for home improvements, followed by Cork and Galway.

Bannon told the Irish Sun: “It’s great that the show has got the whole country taking an interest in their homes and talking about how they want a ‘space’ to look. It’s making a difference and people now want more from their home.”
